How we age is more about choices than about genetics. If you believe this, you also believe you can have more control over the outcome. Historically, most people viewed their own aging as a slow, steady decline toward death and that their aging was mostly dependent on genes.

Today, aging is viewed as a combination of lifestyle, environment and genetics. To age successfully, means a full, vibrant life until shortly before death. Gerontologists and aging specialists call this "squaring the curve"; enjoying your life longer and compressing health declines toward the end of life's curve. In pursuit of that goal, Jeanne on Aging was established.

Through Jeanne on Aging, I will offer my unique combination of Financial Planning and Gerontological Nursing to empower my cohorts to plan for aging just like they planned for retirement. I will explore normal aging, what to expect and how to accommodate for changes as well as simple measures to avoid premature declines. If you have a chronic condition, I will point out ideas to help you stay in control and remain independent. And finally for caregivers, I will offer guidance on being an effective advocate and working with the healthcare system.

The process of aging begins at birth and we all know that some of us age better than others. Aging successfully means you engage change and learn how to manage your lifestyle, resources and support system. By visiting Jeanne on Aging once a month, you'll learn how to square the curve, avoid the slow, steady decline and become a vibrant member of the oldest, old.

Healthy aging,
Jeanne Carlson Smith, RN, MSN, CFP®
